Jill Scott Breaks Down Mary Earps-Hannah Hampton Lionesses Controversy After Book Release (2025)

The world of football is abuzz with the recent controversy surrounding Mary Earps and Hannah Hampton, two talented goalkeepers who have found themselves at the center of a heated debate. The story began when Mary Earps, a former England Lioness, released her autobiography, revealing a series of accusations against her coach, Sarina Wiegman, and her handling of Hannah Hampton. But here's where it gets controversial...

In her book, Earps claimed that Wiegman was 'rewarding bad behavior' by reinstating Hampton to the squad in 2023, after she had been dropped following Euro 2022 due to reports of being 'disruptive and unreliable'. This decision came as a shock to many, as Hampton had starred for the Lionesses during their successful run in Switzerland, saving two penalties in the final shootout with Spain, and later receiving the Yashin Trophy for the world's best goalkeeper, presented by Earps herself.

However, the situation took a turn when Earps attempted to backtrack on her claims, suggesting she was misrepresented and stressing her vulnerability in the book. She even privately messaged Hampton, writing, 'It's gut-wrenching to be portrayed as someone you're not'. But this didn't stop the controversy from escalating.

Former Lioness Jill Scott joined the debate, telling the Stick to Football podcast, 'It’s gone crazy. Obviously, Mary's brought out a book where she's told her side of the story about Hannah Hampton being left out after the Euros, and then Sarina saying she was going to bring her back in, and since then it’s just escalated so much.' Scott added that while both players have their versions of the story, the issue has blown up due to the public nature of the debate.

Former Arsenal and England striker Ian Wright also weighed in, expressing concern for how the drama will impact both Earps and Hampton's form for their respective clubs. He said, 'The sad thing with it is, because the book is so close and she (Hannah) is still playing, and they're so close to everything still. You normally get this narrative 10, 15, 20 years after you’ve retired so it doesn’t hit so hard. But what I’d be careful of for both of them, is they’re not used to the kind of attention they’re going to get in respect to how it comes on top. The pile-on is a worry.'

So, what do you think? Do you agree with Earps' and Scott's views, or do you think there's more to the story? Share your thoughts in the comments below and let's keep the conversation going!
