The road to paying tribute to Daddy Lumba: A Highlife legend's final journey
The body of the renowned Highlife artist Daddy Lumba, born Charles Kwadwo Fosu, will be transported by road from Accra to Kumasi, following his final funeral on December 6, 2025, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium. This decision, made after discussions with the family and funeral committee, aims to allow more people to pay their respects.
Initially, the plan was to airlift the remains, but the road route was chosen to facilitate a more inclusive send-off. The convoy will pass through major towns along the route, offering residents in places like Suhum, Konogo, Ejisu, and Kumasi Akropong the chance to witness and honor the late musician.
Daddy Lumba's death on July 26, 2025, at the Bank Hospital, sparked widespread grief and tributes from public figures, including current and former presidents. In tribute, the Creative Arts Agency, in collaboration with the Fosu family, organized a national candlelight vigil at Independence Square on August 2, 2025, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., coinciding with simultaneous tributes in countries like Germany, the UK, the US, the Netherlands, and other parts of Ghana.
A one-week memorial at Independence Square followed, in line with Akan tradition, bringing together hundreds of fans, artists, dignitaries, and family members. Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, and former Assin Central Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong added a political touch to the solemn event, which featured performances of Daddy Lumba's timeless hits, including 'Aben Wo Ha', 'Sika Asem', and 'Theresa'.
The road procession is a unique and inclusive way to honor a legendary musician, allowing people from various backgrounds and locations to participate in the send-off.
