Held in Johannesburg from November 13th, this significant two-day event was organized through a joint effort by Xinhua News Agency, the African Union (AU), South Africa’s Independent Media, and other key partners. It brought together over 200 delegates representing more than 160 media outlets, think tanks, government agencies, and influential institutions from China and 41 African countries, including the AU. The overarching theme, "Reforming Global Governance: New Roles and Visions for China-Africa Cooperation," revolves around how media and research institutions can play pivotal roles in fostering a fairer international order.
During the opening ceremony, Lyu Yansong, the Editor-in-Chief of Xinhua News Agency, emphasized that Chinese President Xi Jinping has continually prioritized China-Africa relations. He recalled Xi’s vision from last September’s Beijing Summit, where the connection was elevated to an all-weather partnership aimed at building a shared future for the new era—an ambitious goal that calls for collective effort.
Lyu highlighted that media outlets and think tanks bear crucial responsibilities—disseminating trustworthy information, documenting contemporary history, and providing guidance for progress. He proposed that these organizations contribute ideas towards establishing the Global South as a stabilizing influence on global peace, an advocate of open and sustainable development, a constructive force in shaping international rules, and a promoter of intercultural understanding.
He further outlined initiatives like the Global Development, Security, Civilization, and Governance Initiatives, advocating for high-quality journalism and comprehensive research to showcase the unique solutions the Global South offers in reforming global institutions. This collaborative narrative aims to demonstrate the strength of developing countries working unitedly through solidarity and cooperation.
South Africa’s Independent Media Chairman, Iqbal Surve, lauded the Africa-China partnership as a shining example of authentic cooperation rooted in mutual respect, shared ambitions, and the determination to forge a fairer and more inclusive world order. This point underscores how these relations are shaping a new model for international alliances, evolving into a blueprint for future global interactions.
Leslie Richer, director of information and communication at the AU, pointed out that global power structures are currently shifting. Countries from the Global South are increasingly calling for fairer representation, control over their resources, and dignity in development. She emphasized Africa’s ambition to evolve from a mere participant in international conversations to a co-creator of humanity’s future—working alongside China and others from the Global South on pressing issues like climate change, financial equity, and digital governance. Closer media and think tank collaboration are seen as vital to shaping more balanced narratives.
Chinese Ambassador to South Africa Wu Peng highlighted shared histories of anti-colonial movements and development aspirations. As the world's leading developing country and the continent with many developing nations, both China and Africa see themselves as natural allies committed to anti-hegemony and mutual growth. Wu stressed that media outlets and research institutions are instrumental in fostering global solidarity and cooperation among developing nations. The forum, he said, is a golden opportunity to exchange ideas and forge consensus.
Throughout the event, attendees engaged in detailed discussions around three core topics: commitments to reforming global governance, joint efforts for the revitalization of the Global South, and exchanges promoting peaceful coexistence among diverse civilizations. These dialogues reflect the evolution of China-Africa relations over nearly 70 years, which have grown into a model for new-style international partnerships and have significantly contributed to the development trajectory of the Global South.
Gambian Minister of Information, Ismaila Ceesay, expressed the belief that sustainable global governance must be inclusive, multi-faceted, and honor the rich diversity of human experiences. He welcomed China’s support for media training, technology transfer, and infrastructure development—key elements that facilitate this vision.
Similarly, Xu Xinfu of China Energy Investment Corporation highlighted ongoing efforts to share expertise in renewable energy, improve power systems, and train local talent to bolster energy security across Africa, reinforcing the importance of mutual development.
Shen Yumou, representing Hunan province, discussed plans to deepen China-Africa collaborations further—promoting more open trade, sharing advanced industries and technologies, and boosting African exports into China’s rapidly expanding market.
The conference culminated in the launch of a thought-provoking report titled "Jointly Building a New Model of Global Leadership: Working Together for a Fairer and More Rational Global Governance System." Also announced was the formation of the "United in Heart, Path, and Action—2026 China-Africa Partnership Empowerment Plan," a joint communication network designed to elevate the Global South’s influence.
