Asaba: Fastest Growing State Capital South of the Sahara | HRM Obi Azinge Interview (2025)

Asaba, a city with a rapidly growing reputation, has been described as the fastest-growing state capital in Africa, south of the Sahara. This bold statement comes from His Royal Majesty Obi Epiphany Azinge, the Asagba of Asaba, who highlights the city's remarkable transformation and increasing influence.

In a recent interview with ARISE News, the monarch shared his insights on Asaba's development. He emphasized that the city's growth is undeniable, evolving into a significant urban hub on the continent. Azinge's first year in office has been a challenging yet rewarding transition from academia to traditional leadership, and he believes peace is the driving force behind Asaba's success.

"Peace is our main industry," he asserts, "and Asaba's growth speaks for itself. It's not just a claim; it's a fact that Asaba is the fastest-growing state capital in the region."

The monarch acknowledges the unique challenges of his role, stating that the transition from academia to traditional leadership is not a straightforward path. He highlights the lack of structured guidance and the absence of a predecessor to provide mentorship. Despite these obstacles, Azinge believes he has adapted well, attributing his success to the support of the Asaba people.

Asaba's strategic location, nestled by the banks of the Niger River and separating Anambra and Delta States, demands a heightened focus on security and cross-border matters. Azinge credits the city's stability for attracting significant investment, praising the cooperative security network involving local vigilantes, state authorities, and federal agencies.

"We are fortunate to have a peaceful environment in Asaba. There are no incidents of kidnapping, which is a testament to our stability."

The monarch also sheds light on the government's efforts to improve electricity, with a new independent power project set to illuminate the entire capital and create economic opportunities. He believes this project will attract more investment and lead to increased employment.

Azinge expresses his support for ongoing efforts to strengthen the legal standing of traditional rulers, emphasizing the need for recognition and mainstreaming of traditional institutions. He draws attention to countries like South Africa, Namibia, and Ghana, which already provide constitutional recognition for their traditional leadership.

"The proposed bill by Senator Simon Lalong is a step in the right direction. We are not challenging existing government structures; we seek recognition and respect for our traditional roles."

The Asagba describes the proposed Asaba Museum as a vital cultural project, explaining its importance in preserving Asaba's identity and traditions. He believes the museum will inspire and strengthen the community's connection to its past.

"Our people are fully supportive of this initiative. We have experts guiding us, and we are gathering the artifacts that will tell Asaba's story."

On the topic of the Anioma State agitation, Azinge maintains his position that the state should remain within the existing Delta North boundary. He emphasizes the need to understand Delta's diverse geography and spending responsibilities, highlighting the various cities and towns that contribute to the state's development.

"Delta State is not a single-city entity. We have Warri, Sapele, Ughelli, Abraka, and many more. Each area has its own unique needs and contributions."

Azinge praises the newly declared industrial zones, particularly the Kwale area, for their potential to drive investment and create jobs. While acknowledging the region's development gaps, he believes the government's focus is shifting towards these areas.

"There is still work to be done, but I am confident that the government's attention is turning to these regions."
